20 Killed in Al-Qaeda Attack on Mali Army Base near the Border with Mauritania

Bamako (Somaliguardian) –Heavily armed fighters stormed an army camp in Mali near the border with Mauritania, killing 20 soldiers Sunday, JNIM statement claimed.

The camp located in Sokolo in Segou region has been briefly taken control by the attackers as the provisional toll includes several injured, the armed forces said in a statement on Twitter.

In a statement JNIM, an Al-Qaeda branch in Mali said it carried out the attack killing 20 Malian government forces while seizing military equipment.

According to the group, 9 armored vehicles, 20 PK machineguns and ammunitions were seized from the Sokolo base.

Locals reported that the attackers destroyed everything that was inside the base before pulling out. Troops also reportedly hid inside the village fearing seen by the Jihadists.
