Al-Shabaab Militants Storm Army Base In Afgoye town, Somalia; Casualties

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) –Fierce fighting between Somali government troops and Al-Shabaab fighters took place in the town of Afgoye, about 30 kilometers away from the capital Mogadishu, officials have confirmed.

Local officials say heavily armed militants stormed a military base in Mukayga area in the town of Afgoye where heavy exchange of gunfire began. Loud explosions woken residents as fighting intensified overnight late on Saturday.

Military commanders in the area say there were casualties on their side, but stopped short in providing further details.

Al-Shabaab has said it was behind the attack, claiming to have inflicted heavy losses upon Somali government troops.
