Somalia’s Military Court Suspended over Release of Journalist

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s military court has been suspended in a presidential order following the release of a journalist who pleaded not guilty in alleged murder and Al-Shabaab membership.

Hearings and other court operations for the last three weeks have been cancelled after the suspension of its judges.

The National Intelligence Service accused the military court of refusing to hand down a verdict in its favor on the case of independent journalist Mohamed Abuja.

An official at the military court who spoke to somaliguardian said NISA began campaigning for the complete overhaul of the military court over growing frustration on its to order to release the independent journalist.

The official who asked not to be named said after the court was suspended, all operations and hearings were adjourned until further notice.

Internal wrangling of government institutions have recently led to the dismissal of top officials. But it’s unclear whether the National Intelligence Service will have its proposal accepted to dismiss the current judges of the national military court.
