Somalia’s Parliament Ousts Prime Minister in No-confidence Vote

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) –Somalia’s parliament ousted the government of prime minister Hassan Ali Khaire in vote of no-confidence on Saturday.

The speaker of parliament Mohamed Mursal announced that MPs passed vote of no-confidence against the government of mrime minister Hassan Ali Khaire with 170 MPs voting in favor and 8 against.

He added that the president would appoint a new prime minister immediately to lead the country to popular elections.

Opposition and pro-government MPs teamed up to oust the government of prime minister Hassan Ali Khaire who earlier warned of mandate extension –a statement that many believe has cost his post.

The minister of security Mohamed Abukar Islow who spoke to media shortly after vote of no-confidence was passed against government, blamed parliament for seeking mandate extension and described the move as unconstitutional, noting that the speaker swiftly changed agenda set for today’s session without advance notice.

Speaker of parliament Mohamed Mursal who briefed media shortly after parliament’s decision, said the PM failed to lead the country to popular elections and as such, MPs passed vote of no-confidence so that the president would appoint a new prime minister as ordained by the constitution.

In a statement issued shortly after vote of no-confidence against government, president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo said he accepted parliament’s decision and would appoint new prime minister “immediately”.
