Eritrea Accuses US of Stoking Conflict in Ethiopia’s Tigray

NAIROBI (Somaliguardian) – Eritrea’s foreign minister accused the United States of supporting Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) as fighting rages in the war-wrecked northern Ethiopian region of Tigray for more than six months.

Osman Saleh, in a letter to the United Nations Security Council, accused US president Joe Biden’s administration of “stoking further conflict and destabilization” through interference and intimidation in the region.

It comes a few weeks after the United States imposed targeted sanctions on Eritrean and Ethiopian officials deemed responsible for atrocities committed in Tigray region and threatened further actions if those stoking violence in the region fail to reverse course.

“The apparent objective of these acts is to resuscitate the remnants of the TPLF regime,” he said.

Eritrea’s forces have been accused of committing war crimes ranging from mass killings of civilians and gang-rapes – to using starvation as a weapon of war in Tigray region where dozens have recently died of hunger.

Eritrean foreign minister accused the TPLF of launching a disinformation campaign to deflect attention from its illicit schemes to arm itself and topple Abiy Ahmed’s government and urged the UN Security Council “to take appropriate measures to redress the injustice”.

Saleh said recent US decision to impose visa restrictions on current or former Eritrean and Ethiopian government and military officials over Tigray atrocities was part of “unilateral acts of intimidation and interference”.
