HARGEISA (Somaliguardian) –The EU and the Somaliland government jointly launched Berbera Urban Development Project in a well organized ceremony which had in attendance the EU ambassador of Somalia Nocolas Berlanga, the Vice President of Somaliland, Abdirahman Saylici, mayor of Berbera Abdishakur Iddin and other notable figures.
According to a statement from the European Union, the project is intended to support inclusive and sustainable development of the coastal city through strengthening the capacity of the municipality in urban planning, improving waste management systems as well as stimulating employment and entrepreneurship for urban communities.
At the launching ceremony, the EU ambassador highlighted the pivotal role this project is aimed to play in modernizing the port city of Berbera and improving the livelihood quality of its residents.
“This project will propel the city of Berbera to achieve sustainable development goals of building resilient infrastructure, promotion of industrialisation and innovation. The project will hopefully address the challenge to improve waste management not only in economic or operational terms but also considering the environmental and social impacts” said the EU ambassador of Somalia, Nicolas Berlanga.
Somaliland’s Vice President Abdirahman Saylici providing closing remarks at the ceremony reiterated that the project will contribute to the overall government’s policy to drastically reduce poverty.
