Air Strike Targets Ethiopia’s Tigray Capital, Second Time This Week

Air strike Mekelle, Tigray capital

NAIROBI (Somaliguardian) – An air strike launched by Ethiopia’s military targeted a residential area in the capital of the war-riven northern region of Tigray, injuring civilians and causing harm to property, spokesman of Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) Getachew Reda said on Wednesday.

It is the second air strike to have targeted the city within within a week, after another air raid killed three children and wounded dozens of people in Mekelle just two days ago.

Tigrai Television, controlled by the TPLF reported the attack targeted the city center and posted photographs of what appeared to be plumes of billowing smoke, saying the strike occurred at 10:24 a.m local time.

Ethiopia’s government has not immediately commented on the attack.

TPLF spokesman said Ethiopia’s air force had again targeted residential quarters in Mekelle, “causing injury to civilians and harm to property. “Abiy’s reaction to his losses in the ongoing fighting is to target civilians hundreds of KMs away from the battlefield,” he added.
