Children Among Six Killed by Ethiopia Military Air Strikes in Tigray Capital

NAIROBI (Somaliguardian) – At least six civilians, including children were killed and more than 20 others wounded after air strikes conducted by Ethiopia’s military targeted the northern war-wrecked region of Tigray, Tigrayan official said on Thursday.

Photos circulated online appeared to show heavy destruction on buildings as a result of the air raids and rescuers pulling bodies from the debris.

Ethiopian government spokesman Legesse Tulu said the strike hit a site in Mekelle used by the Tigrayan rebels to make and repair weapons. In an interview with the Associated Press, he added that the site forms part of a compound belonging to Mesfin Industrial Engineering, which was also targeted last week.

A spokesman for the Tigrayan forces Nahusenay Belay denied that military targets in Mekelle had been hit and said the a drone strike targeted a “civilian residence”, killing six people and wounding more than 20 others, including three children.

The drone that carried out the air raids appeared to be a Chinese-made Wing Loong, bolstering reports on Chinese and Turkish governments’ sales of aerial vehicles and weapons to Ethiopia amid an intensifying war in the north of the Horn of Africa country.
