NAIROBI (Somaliguardian) – Police in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa have carried out renewed mass arrests of Tigrayans in the latest ethnic profiling campaign, since a war broke out in Tigray late last year.
In an intensifying campaign, police carried out house-to-house searches in many neighborhoods looking for citizens of Tigrayan origin and detaining them.
Authorities in the capital and police have not immediately commented on the operation, whose motive is so far unknown.
It comes as war rages in northern Ethiopia despite international calls for Eritrean forces to withdraw from the region and Abiy’s government to allow unhindered humanitarian access to the conflict-torn region.
The Ethiopian police is arresting only those identified as Tigrayans and are targeting areas in the capital where the community inhabits, in what many have described as an operation spearheaded by ethnic profiling intentions.
Ethiopia had earlier excluded soldiers of Tigrayan ethnicity from its peacekeeping operations in Somalia and Sudan.
