Ethiopia Urges UN OCHA to Refrain from Issuing Misleading Statements

Ethiopia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – The United Nations Office of Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) should refrain from issuing biased and misleading statements and take immediate action to avoid detrimental effects on the longstanding cooperation between Ethiopia and the organization, Ethiopian government said in a statement on Saturday.

Ethiopia denied it had declined requests for a flight carrying humanitarian aid to Tigray region as hundreds of people are in famine conditions in the war-wrecked region.

The Ethiopian government said it had written a letter to the UN Secretary General, protesting “the unconstructive actions of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA)”.

It added that UNOCHA’s statements describing the situation in Tigray region have not been “helpful and constructive since the beginning of the law enforcement operation” in November of last year.

OCHA’s statements and reports seem to be encouraging the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) that led the international community to misconstrue the situation in the northern region, the government said.

Addis Ababa also expressed anger over OCHA’s statements referring to the “outlawed group, which the Ethiopian parliament categorized as a terrorist organization, as the Tigrayan Defense Force (TDF)”.
