NAIROBI (Somaliguardian) – Ethiopia’s military backed by Amhara special forces and militias launched an offensive on the positions of Tigrayan forces in the South of Tigray region, spokesman for Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) Getachew Reda said on Wednesday.
“The #AbiyRegime has launched an offensive against our positions in the Southern Front. After weeks-long provocation using Amhara special force divisions, Amhara militia from all over the region and beyond as well as Fano from Wollo, the southern and sixth command of the regime has joined the fray by launching a large scale offensive,” Getachew Reda tweeted.
“Our forces are heroically defending our positions. The Regime’s well orchestrated campaign the international community has now been revealed for the drama that it has always been.”
It came days after videos emerged showing unusual military deployments made by Ethiopia’s military into the southern border of Tigray region amid push by the international community for peace talks to end the nearly two-year-old conflict.
Tigray authorities said last week that Ethiopian troops had launched probing attacks and targeted the positions of their forces with artillery, though Addis Ababa has not yet commented on the assertions.
