NAIROBI (Somaliguardian) – Ethiopian Nobel Peace Prize winning Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said on Monday he will lead his troops “from the battle front” as Tigrayan forces close in on the capital, Addis Ababa.
“Starting tomorrow, I will mobilize to the front to lead the defense forces,” Ethiopian leader Abiy Ahmed said in a statement on Twitter on Monday.
“Those who want to be among the Ethiopian children, who will be hailed by history, rise up for your country today. Let’s meet at the front,” he added.
The statement follows a meeting between members of the ruling Prosperity Party’s executive committee on Monday to discuss the war raging in the country. Ethiopian defense minister told media after the meeting that security forces would be embarking on a “different action” over the conflict.
A spokesman for Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has dismissed Abiy’s statement, saying that “our forces won’t relent on their inexorable advance towards bringing [Abiy’s] chokehold on our people to an end”.
