Ethiopia’s Army Seizes Key Tigray Stronghold

ADDIS ABABA (Somaliguardian) – Ethiopia’s federal government claimed on Monday it had seized control of another key town in the northern Tigray region after nearly two weeks of fierce clashes in a conflict that risks destabilizing the wider Horn of Africa.

A task force set up by the Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to handle the government’s response o the crisis said federal troops had “liberated” the town of Alamata from the TPLF. It added that local forces fled taking along around 10,000 prisoners.

Media has not been able to independently verify claims made by Ethiopian government due to communications still down and journalists barred.

Tigray authorities have yet to comment on reports over the fall of Alamata, a town near the border with Amhara state, about 120km from Tigray’s regional capital, Mekelle.

Hundreds are so far known to have been killed after military operation ordered by Abiy swung into action 13 days ago and over 25,000 fleeing conflict in northern Ethiopia have crossed the border into Sudan.
