NAIROBI (Somaliguardian) – Media reports that authorities in Ethiopia’s Somali region thwarted a coup attempt to seize power by members of the ruling party are “baseless”, regional Minister of Information Abdulkadir Rashid Du’ale said on Tuesday.
In an interview with the BBC Somali, the Minister stressed that there was no local official who had informed Ethiopian media about reports of a foiled coup attempt.
Authorities had thwarted attempts by former members of Barwaqo ruling party to sow discord and stoke unrest in the region, and an awareness campaign has been subsequently launched, he added.
Over the past weeks there were reports of tensions between members of the region’s ruling party and president Mustafe Omar Agjar alleged that his opponents were dragging the state into a “political turmoil”.
