NAIROBI (Somaliguardian) – The European Union has repeated call for the immediate withdrawal of Eritrean troops from Ethiopia’s war-wrecked Tigray region after the United Nations said there were military forces impeding humanitarian access to parts of the region.
“The United Nations have confirmed that military forces are impeding humanitarian access to parts of Tigray. The EU has repeatedly called for full humanitarian access to all areas, as well as for the immediate withdrawal of Eritrean troops,” the EU said in a statement.
It stressed that the humanitarian crisis following a 6 month-long war between allied Ethiopian and Eritrean troops, and Tigrayan forces is at its worst level, with at least 5.2 million people out of 5.7 million in the region in need of emergency food assistance.
“The use of humanitarian aid as a weapon of war is a grave violation of international humanitarian law and is putting at risk the lives of millions of people,” it added.
The European Union said “immediate and full-scale assistance should be provided” in order to avoid starvation and threatened that those responsible for “deliberately preventing timely access will be held accountable”.
