NAIROBI (Somaliguardian) – Tigray leader Debretsion Gebremichael has said “hundreds of thousands” of Tigrayans were thrown into concentration camps in Ethiopia and many have been “summarily executed” since Abiy Ahmed’s government declared a state of emergency in November.
“These men and women as well as children are being held under cruel, inhumane and degrading conditions. These citizens are kept in substandard conditions with basic necessities such as sufficient food, water and medical care and adequate sanitation facilities being denied,” the President of Tigray Government said, in a letter reportedly sent to the African Union.
“Torture, degrading treatment, ransom payment and killing is common place in the concentration camps,” he added.
The regional leader, whose troops are battling government troops in the north of the country since November last year, said many Tigrayans have been taken to mysterious places and summarily executed by the Ethiopian security forces.
Speaking on external support to Abiy’s government, Debretsion stressed that Turkey, UAE and Iran’s drone shipments to Addis Ababa for use in the conflict raging in Africa’s second most populous nation has led to escalating air strikes targeting civilians and civilian installations.
