NAIROBI (Somaliguardian) – The United States special envoy for the Horn of Africa Jeffrey Feltman is due in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, for talks with the country’s prime minister Abiy Ahmed as Tigrayan rebels bolstered by Oromo Liberation Forces (OLA) advance towards the capital.
The United States expressed deep concern about the expansion of conflict in northern Ethiopia and has called for all sides to pursue dialogue to end the year-long war.
Tigray forces said they had taken the town of Kemise, along a major highway 330km north of the capital Addis Ababa.
In a speech on Wednesday marking the first anniversary of the conflict, Ethiopian Prime Minister said his enemies would be buried with the blood and bones of his forces.
The United States says it is doubling down on diplomatic efforts to create a conducive environment for Tigrayan forces and the government to talk as the international community raises growing alarm over the escalating violence.
On Wednesday, the United Nation’s Secretary General Antonio Guterres said he had spoken to Abiy Ahmed to offer a mediation support.
