At least seven people were killed and 13 others wounded after a vehicle they were traveling in ran over an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Mandera county on Monday, health and police officials said.

County director of health Services Abdi Maalim said Mandera Referral Hospital had received seven bodies and 13 injured patients, among them four in critical condition.

Police commander of Kenya’s North Eastern Region Bunei Rono said a suspect arrested in connection to the attack was being questioned by detectives and gave no further details.

In a report, police claimed that the explosion attack had been carried out by a gang of six and no one has immediately claimed responsibility.

On Monday January 31, 2022, around seven in the morning a civilian vehicle plying Mandera-Arabia road was attacked with an IED. It happened approximately 8kms from Mandera town. The attackers numbering around six then reinforced the IED attack with AK47 rifles. A GSU patrol team which was on foot and close to the area responded immediately,” reads a police report.
