Sudan Says Seized Weapons Onboard Plane From Ethiopia’s Capital

Khartoum Airport

KHARTOUM (Somaliguardian) – Sudan on Sunday said security forces in Khartoum International Airport found a shipment of Russian-made weapons onboard a plane from Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, days after the Ethiopian army accused Khartoum of backing botched sabotage attack on the Renaissance Dam which had been allegedly carried out by the Tigray forces.

A Sudanese official Wajdi Saleh told media in Khartoum that shipment discovered included 72 boxes containing automatic rifles equipped with night vision scopes.

He said the weapons had been sent from Russia to Ethiopia in May 2019 before being transported on a plane from Addis Ababa to Khartoum on Saturday night.

Sudanese authorities said the weapons were onboard Ethiopian airlines plane from Addis Ababa and an investigation was underway, without giving further details.

Over the past months, Sudan seized weapons smuggled from Ethiopia on the border between the two countries amid simmering tensions over a military operation launched by its forces to take a disputed land on Fashaqa border area.
