NAIROBI (Somaliguardian) – Suspected Al-Shabaab insurgents ambushed a vehicle ferrying five court officials in Lango la Simba area near Nyongoro in Lamu County, wounding two members of Kenya’s judiciary, an official said on Wednesday.
The court officials heading from Kipini Mobile Court to Garsen town came under fire at about 5: 50 PM.
Garsen Law Courts Senior Principal Magistrate Paul Rotich, court prosecutor, court assistant and clerk were among those in the ambushed vehicle. They were accompanied by two police officers.
The commisioner of Kenya’s Coast region John Elungata said two court officials were injured and security forces managed to repulse the attack carried out by suspected members of Al-Shabaab, Al-Qae’da affiliate in the East Africa.
A security official, who was nearby as the attack happened, was quoted by Nation Africa as saying that attackers launched a rocket-propelled grenade targeting the judiciary vehicle but missed.
“After the RPG missed the target, the terrorists went ahead to spray the vehicle with bullets. The driver lost control and the vehicle veered off the road,” he said.
Al-Shabaab has not immediately claimed responsibility for the assault, which comes days after the Islamist militants torched eight vehicles belonging to a Chinese construction company in an attack on one of its camps in Lamu County.
