NAIROBI (Somaliguardian) – President of Tigray region Debretsion Gebremichael has said they would resume fighting against Ethiopia’s government if authorities fail to lift prolonged siege on the war-hit region ahead of upcoming peace talks.
In a stern message, the Tigrayan leader called for US and Kenyan mediation in negotiations between Tigray authorities and the Ethiopian government, which are scheduled to begin in Kenya within weeks.
Grebremichael rejected possibility of African Union-mediated talks with Abiy Ahmed’s government, more than a year after war broke out in the northern region.
First ice-breaking meeting between the two sides is expected to be held in Nairobi. US envoy for the Horn of Africa, who has arrived in Addis Ababa is set to push for amicable resolution to the conflict in Ethiopia.
