Top education official survives blast in Kenya, 5 police officers wounded

NAIROBI (Somaliguardian) – A senior Kenyan education official survived an assassination attempt after a roadside blast struck his convoy in northeastern Kenya’s Garissa county, leaving at least 5 police officers wounded, Nation Africa reported on Monday.

The wounded officers were escorting an official with Kenya’s National Council of Nomadic Education along Ijara Sangailu road in Garissa county when they were targeted by the explosion, Ijara deputy Police chief said.

An officer from the National Council for Nomadic Education had requested for security escort towards Hulugho only for the officers to be hit an explosive along the way,” he said.

All the victims were rescued and taken to Manda Bay for medical attention,” he added.

The attack targeted the CEO of Kenya’s National Council for Nomadic Education Aron Yousuf, who is on a campaign trail as indicated in a report made at Ijara Police Station.

Al-Qaeda-aligned militant group Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the assault, saying that three vehicles were damaged as a result of the explosion.

Due to growing attacks by insurgents, no Kenyan government vehicles are allowed to use the insecure Ijara Hulugho road without armed police escort, according to Nation Africa newspaper.
