NAIROBI (Somaliguardian) – The United Nations Secretary-General Amina Mohamed visited areas affected by fighting between allied Ethiopia’s government troops, Eritrean forces and Amhara militias, and Tigray rebels which has claimed the lives of thousands of people and unleashed humanitarian crisis.
The UN official visited a mass grave in the town of Kombolcha in Ethiopia’s Amhara region where government earlier said had been hit by atrocities committed by Tigrayan rebels. She has also held talks with regional officials about the impact of war as the city struggles to heal the wounds of war.
Ms Mohamed has also visited the town of Mekelle, the capital of Tigray region, in the first trip by a top UN official since the war erupted in November 2020.
It comes as the Ethiopian government accuses Tigray forces of massacres and destruction of property in areas they captured during fighting in Afar and Amhara regions last year, but the rebels blame Abiy Ahmed’s government and Eritrea’s military for much of the atrocities committed in the northern regions of Ethiopia.
