US Calls for Ceasefire in Ethiopia, Condemns Abuses Against Civilians

Ethiopia

NAIROBI (Somaliguardian) – The United States on Friday said it was gravely concerned about fighting ongoing in multiple regions of Ethiopia, urging the Ethiopian government and Tigray forces to begin negotiations to end the prolonged conflict.

We urge the Ethiopian government and TPLF to enter at once into into negotiations without preconditions toward a sustainable ceasefire,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said in a statement.

Price said reports of continued human rights abuses and atrocities by the parties involved in the conflict are deeply disturbing, including the reported attack on civilians in a village in the northern Amhara region.

Tigray forces have been accused of killing 120 civilians in a village in Ethiopia’s Amhara region, though the group strongly rejected the claim as a “fabricated allegation”.

We condemn all such abuses against civilians in the strongest possible terms and call on all parties to the conflict to respect human rights and comply with their obligations under international humanitarian law,” Price said.
