NAIROBI (Somaliguardian) – The United States promised support for Egypt’s water amid growing concerns by Cairo and Khartoum over Ethiopia’s move to begin the third filling of the disputed Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on the Blue Nile River.
In a joint statement issued following a meeting between US President Joe Biden and his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, both countries agreed to promote “regional stability”.
“President Biden reiterated U.S. support for Egypt’s water security and to forging a diplomatic resolution that would achieve the interests of all parties and contribute to a more peaceful and prosperous region,” the statement said.
Last month, Ethiopia strongly rejected a similar stance taken by the European Union expressing its support for “Egypt’s water security”.
African Union-mediated talks between Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan collapsed last year over alleged “obstinacy” from the Ethiopian side.
