NAIROBI (Somaliguaridan) – The United States on Monday said it is critical that senior United Nations officials expelled from Ethiopia are allowed to return to the country, hours after UN spokesman had confirmed the officials were no longer in the Horn of Africa nation.
US state department spokesman Ned Price made the comment during a regular briefing, after Ethiopia’s government last week said it was expelling seven UN officials, a move that came days after the world body’s aid chief warned a government blockade of aid had likely forced hundreds of thousands of people in the war-hit northern region of Tigray into famine.
The expelled United Nations officials are no longer in Ethiopia, the world body said on Monday.
“They have been moved from the country to ensure their safety,” UN spokesman Farhan Haq said. “Our priority is to make sure that our staff can go about their work safely… and if we cannot do that, then we have to take other steps,”he added.
