BAIDOA (Somaliguardian) – Islamist militant group Al-Shabaab claims to have killed 6 Ethiopian soldiers in an ambush on the outskirts of the Somalia town of Dinsor in Bay region, late on Tuesday.

Militants ambushed Ethiopian military convoy heading to other parts of Bay region where alarming reports of SNA soldiers under attack were coming from and their intention was to help extricate Somali soldiers assaulted by Islamist fighters.

Among the 6 Ethiopian soldiers were two officers whose bodies were later evacuated by two military helicopters from the town of Baidoa, the seat of power for Southwest Regional State.

Residents in the nearby villages reported hearing heavy gunfire and explosions as the attack unfolded late on Tuesday which lasted for more than an hour.

Ethiopian military and Southwest regional officials have yet to give details of the fighting, which is the latest in a spate of militant attacks targeting allied Somali and African Union troops in the Horn of Africa nation.
