Biden Calls for Withdrawal of Eritrean and Amhara Forces from Ethiopia’s Tigray

NAIROBI (Somaliguardian) – US president Joe Biden has called on Wednesday for the withdrawal of Eritrean and Amhara forces from Ethiopia’s war-wrecked Tigray region and urged immediate humanitarian access to be granted to avoid famine as hunger haunts millions of people in the region.

“Belligerents in the Tigray region should declare and adhere to a ceasefire, and Eritrean and Amhara forces should withdraw,” US president Joe Biden said in a statement.

He said Ethiopian and Eritrean troops “must allow immediate, unimpeded humanitarian access to the region in order to prevent widespread famine.”

It comes a few days after top UN humanitarian official warned of widespread famine in Tigray if emergency aid deliveries do not reach the region within a few weeks time amid reports of Ethiopian and Eritrean troops blocking access to the northern Ethiopian region.

Fighting still continues in many parts of the region, more than six months after Ethiopian prime minister Abiy Ahmed ordered a large-scale offensive against the country’s former ruling party, Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).
