Ethiopia Army Chief Slips into Somalia for Secret Talks

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has held secret talks with Ethiopian army chief and Oromia regional president who have recently arrived in Mogadishu for an undisclosed visit.

Ethiopia’s army chief Gen. Birhanu Jula and the president of the country’s Oromia region Shimelis Abdisa slipped into Somalia on Friday for secret talks with the Somali president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo and his intelligence chief.

The Ethiopian delegation and Somali president discussed issues including the country’s upcoming elections, presence of Ethiopian troops in Somalia and the current situation of northern Ethiopian conflict-torn region of Tigray, where reports have recently emerged of deployment of Somali troops to participate in what Ethiopia’s government billed as “law enforcement operation” against TPLF rebels in the region early on November last year.

Somali government has not commented on the visit of the Ethiopian delegation, which has come amid heightening dispute over the country’s upcoming elections.

Opposition leaders had earlier warned against government’s intention to use Ethiopian and other foreign troops in a bid to hijack the elections.
