Ethiopia’s PM Says Eritrea to Withdraw Troops From Tigray

Ethiopia

NAIROBI (Somaliguardian) – Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said Eritrea has agreed to pull out its troops from Tigray region, as pressure continues to build on the Ethiopian authorities over mass atrocities against civilians committed in the embattled region.

“In our March 26, 2021 discussions with President Isaias Afwerki during my visit to Asmara, the government of Eritrea has agreed to withdraw its forces out of the Ethiopian border,” Abiy said in a statement posted on twitter on Friday.

Abiy stated that restoring “trust-based people to people relations among our citizens in the Tigray region and fellow Eritreans across the border is essential,”

“The Ethiopian National Defense force will take over guarding the border areas effective immediately,” he added.

The Ethiopian prime minister has not said how many Eritrean troops are in Tigray, though witnesses say tens of thousands of soldiers from the neighboring nation are in the embattled region.

The statement has come a day after Abiy Ahmed visited Eritrea’s capital, Asmara to hold talks with Isaias Afwerki following pressure from the United States to end conflict in Tigray immediately.
