Ethiopia Claims Killing and Capturing Most of Tigray Leaders

Ethiopia

KHARTOUM (Somaliguardian) – Ethiopa killed or captured most of former Tigrayan leaders with the rest being pursued, Ethiopian ambassador to Sudan Yibeltal Aemero said on Wednesday.

“We killed and captured most of the Tigrayan leaders and the rest are being pursued, Yibeltal said, adding that the Tigray region is under control and “we are trying to rebuild it.”

Following reports that the Ethiopian and Eritrean forces in the region committed atrocities against humanity, the ambassador accused the Tigrayan rebels of committing massacres against the army.

Amid debate over who started the war in the region and after recent reports suggested that Eritrean forces crossed over to the Ethiopian border days before Tigray forces attacked an Ethiopian army base in Mekelle, Yibeltal Aemero reiterated that the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) expelled the army from the region before Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed ordered a “law enforcement” operation in November last year.

Ethiopian ambassador in Khartoum accused the Tigray rebels of going ahead with the region’s seccession from the rest of the country, though the leaders of Tigrayan forces have not yet announced such an intention.

“Four million people in Tigray have received humanitarian aid,” the ambassador said.

“A committee to investigate crimes committed against residents of the Tigray region will be formed.”
