NAIROBI (Somaliguardian) – Ethiopia’s Tigray forces have claimed killing 110 allied Ethiopian and Eritrean troops, capturing prisoners and military equipment in the country’s conflict-hit north, weeks after new military offensive aimed to end their resistance swung into action.
In a new video report released via DW, Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) said it carried out an offensive on February 15 between Gijet and Tash towns against “enemy troops”.
The attacked troops were looting the area and killing civilians, the report noted, without specifying whether they were members of the Ethiopian federal troops or Eritrean forces present in the region.
The TPLF claimed to have killed 110 soldiers, wounding 123 and capturing 26 others. Several machine guns, snipers and AKs were captured, while 12 buses and 2 Urals were “disabled”, according to the report.
After being incurred with heavy losses, surviving troops retreated, TPLF report said, though it is not immediately clear whether the two towns fell to their hands.
Somaliguardian has not been able to verify claims by the TPLF due to internet blackout still in place in many parts of the Tigray and journalists barred from traveling to the region.
