NAIROBI (Somaliguardian) – Ethiopia’s prime minister has admitted for the first time that troops from Eritrea supported his nation’s federal forces during the war in Tigray against troops of the region’s former ruling party.
In response to questions from lawmakers on Tuesday in the capital, Addis Ababa, Abiy Ahmed said Eritrean forces crossed over their border into Ethiopia after Ethiopian defense forces began a “law enforcement” operation in Tigray in November last year.
His comments have come after the United States called for withdrawal of Eritrean forces and Amhara militias from the war-hit region amid reports of human rights violations and dire humanitarian situation.
In his remarks, the premier acknowledged that armed parties including Eritrean and Ethiopian forces committed human rights abuses and promised to bring the perpetrators to justice.
