HARGEISA (Somaliguardian) – Gunmen attacked campaign headquarters in the town of Lasanod in the break-away state of Somaliland where a fierce exchange of gunfire with police broke out on Sunday night.
The office came under attack while former minister of public works and transport Abdirisak Khalif Ahmed, who is now running for a parliament seat, was visiting the area.
The regional politician left the area unhurt immediately after the attack, witnesses have told Somaliguardian on Monday but some of his supporters were among several wounded in the shootout.
Motive behind the assault has not been immediately known and Somaliland security officials have yet to brief media about the incident, which is the latest in a series of attacks in the city carried out by unidentified gunmen.
Militias against Somaliland’s control in the town hurled grenade at an office in the town where registration of voters for the self-declared state’s 2021 elections was underway earlier this year.
Last year, a regional court official was killed in the town over yet unrevealed motives and no one has immediately claimed responsibility. In the same year, attackers stormed a jail and freed at least several people, who had been detained by police for involvement in murder case.
