Kenya: Al-Shabaab Kills Senior Military Commander

Kenya

NAIROBI (Somaliguardian) – Top Kenyan military commander has been killed in a militant attack near the town of Mandera on Friday, local officials confirm.

Commander of recently trained Somali-Kenyan force Abdi Nur Omar is reported to have been killed in Aliyale village outside the border town of Mandera.

Al-Qaeda-linked Islamist group Al-Shabaab says it was behind the assassination, claiming that the man was leading local force trained to wage attacks against its fighters in northeastern Kenya.

Mandera authorities have confirmed the attack, stopping short in giving further details.

Al-Shabaab militant group often carries out deadly attacks in both Kenya and Somalia while the two countries receiving international support sustain efforts to quell its influence.
