HARGEISA (Somaliguardian) – Malawi’s Foreign Minister Eisenhower Mkaka leading a high-profile delegation including Malawian MPs has received a warm welcome in Somaliland after making his first visit to the breakaway region’s capital, Hargeisa on Saturday.
Mr Mkaka and his delegation are expected to meet with Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi over issues which include establishing formal relations between Hargeisa and Lilongwe.
His visit comes a few days after Kenya and Somaliland agreed to establish formal relations, and exchange diplomatic offices, angering the Somali federal government based in Mogadishu, which announced severing diplomatic ties with Nairobi in response to the deal sealed between Muse Bihi Abdi and Uhuru Kenyatta.
Malawi edged closer to forming relations with Somaliland during the term of former President Dahir Riyale Kahin and sent businesspeople including owners of mining companies to the breakaway state, though the succeeding Somaliland administrations fell short in advancing diplomatic and trade ties with Lilongwe.
