MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Mayor of Mogadishu Omar Filish blamed Kenya on Tuesday for anti-government protests that rocked Somalia’s capital, followed by clashes which left several dead, hours after Somali federal government announced severing diplomatic ties with Kenya.
The mayor said Somali federal government, considering Kenya’s aggressive efforts to annex parts of Somalia, had taken a decision to suspend relations with the government of Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Omar Filish added that anti-government protesters which hit the streets of Somalia’s capital on Tuesday were sympathizers of what he described as Kenyan agents, referring to Somali opposition leaders, whom he accused of sending dozens of masked men armed with AKs and machineguns to protest against the federal government’s move to sever ties with Kenya.
Opposition leaders have not immediately commented on the mayor’s remarks.
It comes weeks after Omar Filish threatened that opposition presidential candidates will be captured and killed if they do not refrain from attempts to destabilize the capital.
