MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Mogadishu Port manager Ahmed Washington survived an assassination attempt after an explosion targeted his vehicle on Saturday in a high security area of Somalia’s capital.
Mr Washington was heading to work early on Saturday morning when huge blast ripped through his vehicle, killing two of his bodyguards, the seaport manager has confirmed.
Al-Qaeda-affiliated militant group Al-Shabaab has immediately claimed responsibility for the blast, the second to be carried out by Islamists in Somalia’s capital within 12 hours.
A suicide bomber attacked an ice-cream parlor near the city’s international airport, popularly attended by government officials and state employees. At least eight people were killed in the bombing, among them officials and security officers.
Somali federal government condemned the explosion and sent condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in the “terrorist attack”.
Mogadishu Port manager Ahmed Washington speaking to local media says he narrowly escaped the explosion thought to have been a roadside bomb. He added that two of his bodyguards sitting at the back of his pickup vehicle were killed in the attack.
