More Troops Deployed in Somalia State Media Headquarters

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – More troops armed with heavy weapons have been deployed in Somalia’s state media headquarters over coup fears after parliament voted to extend president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo’s term last week, Caasimada Online website has reported on Thursday.

The number of presidential guards at the state media headquarters, who protect the security of several government buildings including the presidential palace, have been increased and troops in large numbers could be seen inside a complex that houses the state television, Radio Mogadishu, army radio and the government-run news agency.

The government has not immediately commented on the motive behind the new deployment.

The website quoted several employees at state media that the fresh deployment came after Somalia’s parliament extended the president’s term by two additional years and former police chief of Mogadishu Sadiq John had defected from the government.
