MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Opposition-aligned Somali national army forces, who emptied their bases in the Middle Shabelle region, have taken over control of several key districts in the north of Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu on Sunday amid simmering tensions over president’s decision to extend his term.
Troops captured Many parts of Yaqshid, Karan and Hiliwa districts in the north of the capital after pro-government forces had withdrawn without clashes.
Some of the commanders of the troops, said to be closely aligned to the opposition, said president Farmajo’s “attempts to enslave them” sparked their advance on the capital and will continue the march until he is removed from power.
They accused the president of putting in place measures to prevent them from visiting their families in Mogadishu and repressing troops in the Middle Shabelle region due to their clan affiliation with opposition leaders.
Anti-government protest began in the north of the capital, with residents burning tyres on the streets and calling for the president Farmajo to quit.
