MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somali president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo called for a meeting between federal and regional leaders in the town of Dhusamareb, hours after international community representatives urged him to end deadlock over upcoming elections.

International community representatives held a meeting with the Somali leader at the presidential compound in Mogadishu on Saturday calling on president Farmajo to immediately convene a conference with the leaders of the country’s 5 regional states and the governor of Banadir region.

President Farmajo has set a timeline for a meeting with the federal member state leaders hours later. In a press statement, the president said the meeting will take place in the town of Dhusamareb between February 1 and 3.

Leaders of Puntland and Jubalad had earlier urged the president to host the meeting on January 30 to bring an end to the differences over the upcoming elections, with only a few days to go before president’s term expires.

An extraordinary session of parliament is scheduled to be held on February 5 where the president will address MPs over the current situation and the country’s upcoming elections.

There have been unconfirmed reports that the president will urge MPs to extend his term which expires on February 8 to avoid power vacuum and hold elections.
