Several Killed in Car Bomb on Military Camp in Somalia

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – A car bomb exploded outside a military outpost in central Somalia on Friday, killing several soldiers and wounding a number of others, the latest in a string of attacks carried out by militants trying to topple western-backed government over the past weeks.

It comes amid tense military buildup in the area where government troops and fighters of the Islamist militant group Al-Shabaab are vying for control of a number of key towns in the south of Mudug region.

Somali government troops and regional authorities claimed that the bombing was foiled and soldiers shot dead a man who had been trying to ram a car packed with explosives into the military outpost.

Al-Qaeda-aligned Islamist militant group Al-Shabaab said it had carried out the attack, which it claims to have killed at least 7 soldiers and destroyed four military vehicles.

Photos circulated online show a number of military vehicles damaged by the blast, including a Zu-32-mounted truck, though government troops denied reports that the bombing caused fatalities.
