MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somali deputy army chief General Abas Amin Ali has survived a blast that ripped through a vehicle he was traveling in during a busy morning rush hour in the capital Mogadishu on Sunday.

At least two of the general’s bodyguards were killed and another wounded in the bombing at a recently reopened busy road at the heart of the Somali capital, according to Dalsan Radio.

The general narrowly escaped the explosion, said to have been caused by a bomb planted on the road.

Security forces immediately rushed to the scene and cordoned off the road as a rescue operation swung into action, though the road has later been reopened to traffic.

Al-Qaeda-affiliated militant group Al-Shabaab has claimed credit for the attack.
