MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somali militants launched an attack on African Union military base on the outskirts of the capital, the second within forty eight hours, local officials have confirmed on Tuesday.
Residents say they heard fierce exchange of gunfire between the two sides and the explosion of mortar shells falling inside the heavily garrisoned AMISOM base in Elasha neighborhood, a few kilometers outside the Somali capital.
Fighters of the militant group Al-Shabaab launched mortar shells on the base before carrying out a direct attack on Monday evening.
Casualties on both sides still remain unknown. Somali government and AMISOM officials have not yet commented on the attack, which is the second to have targeted the base in two consecutive nights.
