MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somali president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has convened a meeting with pro-government regional state leaders in the heavily fortified Halane base camp in the capital Mogadishu.
The leaders of Puntland and Jubaland regional states have not attended the summit aimed to end a long-standing stalemate over the country’s elections. Their absence has come after president Farmajo ignored pre-conditions include signing a letter requiring him to transfer his security responsibilities before talks could resume.
International community representatives in the war-torn nation have been trying to bring together Somalia’s political stakeholders in last-ditch efforts to resolve a dispute over electoral process, though many of the country’s politicians say hopes of a political breakthrough have receded, accusing the term-ended leader of clinging to power.
The conference has come hours after Puntland leader said on Sunday that government troops surrounded and attacked his residence in Halane base, which is home to several international diplomatic missions.
