MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somali presidential guards have carried out a massive house-to-house search operation in the neighborhoods close to president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo’s residence in Mogadishu on Tuesday night.
Dozens of youths were rounded up after being taken from their homes in Bondhere and Wardhigley neighborhoods, which are close to the Somali presidential compound.
Many of those taken from their homes have been released following a brief investigation with others taken to prisons inside Villa Somalia, residents have told Somaliguardian.
Residents say they were panicked at the sight of heavily armed troops knocking on their doors overnight and telling young men to come out of their homes, in what authorities say was part of efforts aimed at improving deteriorating security.
It comes amid spiraling insecurity and political crisis in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu where a number of attacks including a recent mortar shelling on Halane base camp – which is home to a number of diplomatic missions – have taken place over the past few weeks.
