Somalia Condemns ‘Israeli Occupation Forces’ Air Strike on Qatari Compound in Gaza

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s federal government has condemned an air strike by “Israeli occupation forces” on the headquarters of Qatari Red Crescent in the Gaza Strip where 11-day long bombardment ended on Friday following a ceasefire proposed by Egypt.

“The Federal Republic of Somalia condemns the Israeli occupation forces’ targeting of the headquarters of the Qatari Red Crescent in the Gaza Strip with air strikes… Monday May 17,” Somalia’s foreign ministry said in a statement on Saturday.

It added that the strike “resulted in the killing and wounding of a number of innocent people and severe damage to Hamad Bin Khalifa Hospital”.

Somalia has been a key ally of Qatar over the past four years since outgoing president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo came to office and enjoys Doha’s funding in its efforts to curtail influence of UAE-allied opposition figures in the Horn of Africa country.

Qatar has long been accused of being a key supporter of the outgoing president’s bid to stay in power beyond his term, whose funding was also used for smear campaigns and attacks against opposition figures to silence Farmajo’s critics.
