Somalia: Fighting Between Al-Shabaab and Galmudug Troops Underway

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) –Fierce fighting erupted near the town of Dhusamareb in Somalia’s Galmudug State after regional troops were attacked by heavily armed militants of the Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab group.

People who saw the attack begin in Bula’le, a village near Galmudug regional capital, Dhusamareb say the two sides exchanged heavy gunfire. Explosions were also heard amid reports of rural areas shelled.

Local officials have yet to comment on the attack, but the incident comes a few hours after regional vice president instructed troops in the frontline areas to focus on preparing for war against Al-Shabaab, days after Galmudug President Ahmed Qoorqoor survived an assassination when anti-aircraft shots were fired at his plane during takeoff from Dhusamareb airport.

There are ports of casualties on both sides but it is too early to give official figure as fighting is still underway in the area.
