MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Fierce fighting erupted near the town of Buloburde in Somalia’s Hiran region after militants attacked a convoy of Somali government troops early on Monday morning, local officials have confirmed.
Reports say fighters of the Islamist group Al-Shabaab launched an attack on members of the Somali army who were on an operation to remove militant siege on multiple towns in the region.
Residents in rural areas reported hearing heavy gunfire and explosions as fighting continued on the road linking between Buloburde and Burwayn towns.
Somali military officials told local media that there have been casualties but stopped short in giving further details.
The fighting comes a few days after roadside bomb killed at least 6 soldiers near the town of Burwayn in Hiran region.
