MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – In a communique issued following a meeting held in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu on Tuesday, Hawiye clan said they had ceased to recognize Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo as president and urged him to rescind a term extension decision.
The meeting had in attendance of traditional leaders, renowned political figures and civil society members of the clan. Among the attendees included former presidents Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, and former prime minister Hassan Ali Khaire.
The clan called on the federal parliament and president Farmajo to reverse a vote that had extended their mandates last week and called for immediate action to prevent the term extension resolution from taking effect.
Politicians and traditional leaders at the conference accused president Farmajo of stoking division among Somalis and igniting conflict in a bid to remain in office without a clear plan for succession.
The clan urged AMISOM to review its protection of Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo, whom they accused of serving beyond his constitutional mandate and warned officials, including the intelligence chief, Land Forces commander and Police Chief of supporting the Somali leader in his “power grab attempts”.
